Wired posted what I assume to be a mock acceptance letter to the Kurzweil Singularity University… amusing. Almost enough to make me want to go back to school.

Bathroom Horrors
Tokyo horror novelist Koji Suzuki has published a new novella – on toilet paper. Short enough to repeat several times a roll, the story is rest room themed (with goblins thrown in of course) and costs 210 yen.

Surface of the Sun

What happens when scientists get their hands on a 76-teraflop supercomputer? Wired reports that this mind-boggling CPU power was used to create a simulation of a sunspot, modelling the sun’s magnetic processes at work over a region 31,000 miles by 62,000 miles, and with a depth of 3,700 miles. That is a lot of sun action – and we can just be thankful that the output is so completely gorgeous. Check out wired for the full story.

The Guiding Light of Homer Simpson

While perhaps not a model for healthy living, Homer Simpson might make a good – at least amusing – avatar for your GPS system. And so Dan Castellaneta has been hired to this effect by TomTom NV. Imagine taking directions from the man that once said, “Operator! Give me the number for 911!” The system offers a number of voices, including celebrity voices, each about $12.95, including: John Cleese, Burt Reynolds, Curt Shilling, Dennis Hopper and Mr. T.

I’ll post the trailer again. Why not?

Fear of Israeli Robotic Snakes
Snakes are the most terrifying form of robot I can think of, maybe because I just watched Terminator Salvation. That scene with the robots in the water …. shudder. So my eyebrows went up when I saw the Israeli snake robot covered at engadget today (video below). It looks almost ready for deployment, but also a bit like a sock puppet, so not too scary. Meanwhile, the Biorobotics Lab at Carnegie Mellon University has snake robots rolling, swimming and climbing which freaks me out a bit more – but to be clear, I’m afraid of snakes – not robots. Oh and robotic snakes.

Padma Changes Burgers Forever
This is a cross-post with foodandtell.com, but it can’t be shared enough. You don’t have to watch top chef to worship padma. Or burgers. Or padma worshipping burgers. Enough said.
*dont forget to press HQ for the high quality version*

Robot Sidekicks
Wired has published a scale of robot sidekicks from solid gold to scrap medal, ahead of the anticipated film Moon, out June 12, by Duncan Jones (David Bowie’s son). Apparently the robot companion that Sam Rockwell is stuck on the moon with is played by Kevin Spacey. If I was stuck on the moon with only an AI for company, i would NOT want it to sound like kevin spacey. That is just asking for something weird to happen. Give me Padma any day.
